Dead Meadow to release “Foundlings”, a two-decade rarities collection honoring late bassist Steve Kille
Veteran American psychedelic rock trio Dead Meadow have joined forces with label Heavy Psych Sounds to release “Foundlings”, a seven-track collection gathering unreleased material, special sessions and rare recordings made between 2002 and 2024. The album arrives July 31 and offers a fresh look at the artistic evolution of one of contemporary psychedelic rock’s foundational bands.
Known for their hypnotic blend of heavy riffage, dreamy atmospherics and mesmerizing grooves, Dead Meadow have spent nearly three decades crafting their signature sound. “Foundlings” sheds light on lesser-known corners of that history, with a tracklist comprising “Lost To Light, ” “Nobody Home, ” “Kingdom of Heaven, ” “Tomorrow Never Knows, ” “Everything’s Goin' On, ” “No Quarter” and “From The Children Of Planet Earth.”
Highlights include covers of classic material: “Tomorrow Never Knows” by The Beatles (from “The Nothing They Need” sessions), “No Quarter” by Led Zeppelin (originally cut for a Cleopatra Records tribute compilation), and a take on “Kingdom of Heaven” by Powell St. John (from the “Sonic Cathedral” sessions). The collection also features original tracks drawn from the “Voyager to Voyager” album sessions, an EarthQuaker Devices session, and a Committee to Keep Music Evil recording made with Anton Newcombe and Rob Campanella of The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Beyond its musical value, “Foundlings” carries special emotional weight as a tribute to Steve Kille, bassist and founding member of the band, who passed away two years ago after a long battle with cancer. Drum duties on the record are split between Mark Laughlin and Stephen McCarty. With this release, Dead Meadow not only revisit part of their own history but also reaffirm a legacy that places them alongside Black Mountain, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and The Black Angels as essential names in modern heavy psych.
