Editors announce eighth album “Surface, Echo & Sound” and release single “The Rush”
British band Editors have unveiled the single “The Rush” alongside the announcement of the title and release date for their eighth studio album. “Surface, Echo & Sound” arrives October 30 via Play It Again Sam, following lead single “Call It In”, which was released a few months earlier, shortly after frontman Tom Smith’s Spanish solo tour.
Smith describes “The Rush” as an imagined bar scene: two people talking about life, drinking, and reflecting on the ups and downs they’ve been through. He notes that the idea of finding comfort in close people — friends, partners, family — is a recurring theme that runs through nearly everything the band creates. Musically, the track is built around a mandolin, lending it a warm, folk-tinged atmosphere that marks a departure from the synths and electronic textures that dominated much of 2022's “EBM”.
Recording on “Surface, Echo & Sound” began in summer 2025, when the band deliberately moved away from the studio-driven approach of their previous three records, returning to a more organic process — playing face-to-face, the way they did in their early days in a Stafford rehearsal room. The album’s sound was also shaped by Tom Smith’s stripped-back solo record, “There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn’t There In The Light.”
The band is also marking the 20th anniversary of its debut album, “The Back Room” (2005), the record that established Editors as one of the standout names of the British alternative scene. Tour dates supporting the new album include stops in Madrid (Friday, January 29, 2027, La Riviera), Valencia (Saturday, January 30, Auditorio Roig Arena) and Barcelona (Sunday, January 31, Sala Razzmatazz).
