Madrid’s Gruta 77 to close in December after 26 years and more than 5,100 concerts

Gruta 77, one of the cornerstones of Madrid’s underground music scene, will shut its doors in December 2026. The announcement was made by Juan Luis Nieto, known as “el Indio”, who has run the Carabanchel venue since it opened in 2000, through a personal statement posted on social media.

Over 26 years, the concert hall hosted more than 5,100 events, with both Spanish and international acts gracing its stage: Siniestro Total, The Casualties, Bad Manners, The Damned, Burning, The Yardbirds and many others. The closure will also affect the rehearsal rooms on the premises, a vital resource that has served countless Madrid bands throughout the years.

El Indio was candid about his reasons: decades of relentless work — mornings to midnight, six or seven days a week, eleven months a year — have taken their toll. At 57, with 34 uninterrupted years in Madrid’s nightlife industry, he says he needs to rest and reclaim his quality of life.

The Gruta 77 promoter label will continue, organising concerts at other venues across the city. Before closing, the space plans to put on a proper farewell programme worthy of its legacy.
