Melissa Auf der Maur announces her first music release in 16 years

Former Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf der Maur is set to release her first musical project in sixteen years. The release, titled “BASS WOMB ROOM: My 90s 4-Track Demos x Field Recordings, ” is scheduled for September 4.

The project combines archival material with newly created recordings. At its core are demo tapes recorded by Auf der Maur in the 1990s, before joining Hole, alongside eight new instrumental compositions built from field recordings captured throughout different stages of her career, including her time touring with Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins. The first track from the project, “Skip a Beat, ” is already available for streaming.

The release coincides with the opening of the BASS WOMB ROOM exhibition, which will debut on September 2 at the Art Gallery of Ontario. The exhibition will feature photographs taken by Auf der Maur over nearly three decades of her artistic career.

240-page photo book connected to the project will be published a few days after the exhibition opens, bringing together a curated selection of images related to the exhibition and the album.

The release marks Melissa Auf der Maur’s first new musical work since her 2010 album “Out of Our Minds.” It also follows the publication of her memoir, “Even the Good Girls Will Cry, ” in which she reflects on her career in the alternative rock scene of the 1990s.
