Queen’s Historic 1986 Budapest Concert Heads to Cinemas in 4K Restoration
Sony Music Vision has announced the theatrical release of the restored recording of Queen's 1986 Budapest concert. The show, performed on July 27 of that year at Népstadion, was the first major stadium rock performance by a Western band behind the Iron Curtain and also the final live performance filmed with Freddie Mercury. The film Queen Budapest will open in cinemas and IMAX worldwide on October 7, with a DVD and Blu-ray release following on October 30.
The footage was restored in 4K from the original 35mm negatives by Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post Production, with the audio remixed from the original multitrack recordings. According to other sources, roughly 80,000 fans packed the stadium that night, while an estimated 45,000 more listened from outside. The restored film’s world premiere takes place September 15 at the Budapest Classics Film Marathon, followed by a UK premiere in London on September 30.
