Tom Morello launches sci-fi comic project about freedom and resistance

Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, is returning to the world of comics with a new project titled Leviathan Freedom — a science-fiction miniseries inspired by the real-life story of American historical figure Robert Smalls.

Morello is joined on the project by Emmy-winning writer and producer Marc Guggenheim and artist Szymon Kudrański. The five-issue series will be released this summer as part of Amazon Comixology Originals.

This is not Morello’s first step into comics — he previously released the Orchid series in 2011. The new project continues his interest in politically and socially charged storytelling, this time reimagined through a space-based sci-fi narrative.

Leviathan Freedom reinterprets the story of Robert Smalls, a man born into slavery who gained freedom by seizing a Confederate ship and escaping with others to safety. In this version, the story is transposed into a galactic civil war, where the struggle for liberation becomes a universal conflict.

According to Morello, he has always been drawn to stories of revolutionaries and figures often overlooked or simplified by history:
“Their courage and resistance against injustice shaped the world, even if their names are rarely remembered. Smalls’ story feels perfect for reimagining on a larger, cosmic scale.”

Marc Guggenheim describes the project as a reflection on the cost of freedom and the reality that it is rarely achieved without struggle.

The series will be part of the Comixology Originals lineup, alongside other creator-driven projects in science fiction and graphic storytelling.
