Green Day comedy “Nimrods” set for August theatrical release

Green Day have announced the release date for their upcoming film Nimrods, a comedy inspired by the band’s early years and the chaotic touring period that preceded their breakthrough with Dookie (1994).

The feature, developed with the band’s involvement, was previously known as New Year’s Rev. After being screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film is now scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on August 14.

The story follows three friends who set out on a road trip under the mistaken belief that they have been invited to open for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve show. From there, the film unfolds as a tale driven by youthful energy, spontaneity, and the DIY ethos of early punk culture.

The narrative draws on the band’s formative years — long van rides, small venue gigs, and the raw lifestyle that shaped their identity.

The film is directed by Lee Kirk and stars Mason Thames, Mckenna Grace, Fred Armisen, and Jenna Fischer.

The title Nimrods references the album Nimrod, reinforcing the connection between the film and the band’s history. Blending humor with nostalgia, the project offers a look at the origins of one of the most influential acts in American punk rock.
