Daddy Yankee to Be Named Latin Grammy Person of the Year 2026
Puerto Rican artist Daddy Yankee has been named Person of the Year by the Latin Grammy Awards 2026. The announcement was made by the Latin Recording Academy, which highlighted his influence on the development of Latin music and the global popularization of reggaeton.
The ceremony will take place on November 11 in Las Vegas as part of Latin Grammy Week. As in previous years, a special gala will be held in honor of the artist, where performers from different countries will reinterpret his hits.
The award comes at a symbolic moment, as the artist approaches the 30th anniversary of his career. The Academy emphasizes that his consistency, discipline, and strategic vision helped transform reggaeton from a local urban genre into a global musical force.
The artist’s real name is Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez. A turning point in his career came in 2004 with the album Barrio Fino, which included the track Gasolina. This release played a key role in bringing reggaeton to international audiences and establishing it in global pop culture.
Since then, Daddy Yankee has maintained a constant presence on the charts, with numerous hits, top positions, and collaborations that defined an era. One of the most notable examples is Despacito, recorded with Luis Fonsi, one of the biggest global hits of the 21st century.
The Academy also highlights his role as a cultural figure. His journey—from the streets of San Juan to the world’s biggest stages—has inspired a new generation of Latin artists who now shape the global music landscape.
This recognition coincides with an important period in the artist’s personal life. In 2022, he announced his retirement from music and his turn to faith, which surprised the industry. A few years later, he returned with a new creative direction focused on more meaningful and positive messages.
His album Lamento en Baile (2025) reflects this phase, combining urban rhythms with more personal and thoughtful lyrics. At the same time, he remains active in the industry, including collaborations with Bizarrap as part of the BZRP Music Sessions.
As tradition dictates, the Person of the Year gala will bring together artists from various genres—from pop to salsa and reggaeton. This year’s event is expected to serve as a retrospective of urban music’s evolution, from its origins to its status as a dominant global force.
The recognition of Daddy Yankee confirms what the industry has long acknowledged: his name has become synonymous with musical transformation. In 2026, that influence will receive formal and symbolic recognition.
