Ibeyi: Where Soul, Electronic Music and Afro-Cuban Heritage Meet

French-Cuban duo Ibeyi will perform in Spain as part of the Primavera Sound Tours programme. Formed by twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz, the project brings together contemporary electronic music, soul, alternative R&B and musical traditions connected to Afro-Cuban heritage and Yoruba culture.

Ibeyi’s sound is shaped by the interplay of vocals, percussion and electronic textures. Moving freely across genres, the sisters combine organic rhythms with minimalist arrangements and contemporary production. Rather than following a conventional musical formula, they have developed a distinctive approach in which cultural roots meet experimentation and modern sound design.

The name Ibeyi means “twins” in Yoruba, reflecting a cultural connection that plays an important role in the sisters’ artistic identity. In their music, traditional influences are not simply references to the past; they become part of a contemporary expression shaped by vocal interplay, rhythmic detail and electronic production. This combination gives their work a recognisable character that moves between soul, electronic music and alternative R&B.

The Spanish leg of the tour includes two performances. Ibeyi will take the stage at La Paloma in Barcelona on 30 November 2026, followed by a concert at Sala But in Madrid on 1 December 2026. The two dates offer audiences an opportunity to experience the duo’s distinctive musical language in two established live music venues.

Ibeyi’s artistic identity lies in their ability to bring together different influences without losing coherence. Their compositions combine expressive vocals, layered rhythms and electronic textures, creating a sound that balances intimacy with rhythmic intensity. Rather than simply merging genres, the sisters explore how cultural heritage can inform contemporary musical expression.

The Barcelona and Madrid concerts will appeal to listeners interested in alternative soul, electronic music and experimental pop. Ibeyi’s work offers a compelling perspective on the relationship between musical traditions and modern production, with a strong emphasis on vocal expression, atmosphere and rhythm. For audiences looking beyond conventional genre boundaries, these performances provide an opportunity to discover a duo whose sound is both culturally grounded and distinctly contemporary.
