Gary “Mani” Mounfield, Bassist of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, Dies

British musician Gary “Mani” Mounfield, legendary bassist of The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has passed away at the age of 63. His brother Greg announced the news on Facebook, writing: “With a very heavy heart, I must share the passing of my brother.” The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

The musician died on the morning of November 20 at his home in Heaton Moor, Stockport. According to local media, an ambulance arrived at the scene around 10:42 a.m., but the artist could not be saved.

Mani became part of the classic lineup of The Stone Roses in 1987, playing on two of the band’s studio albums: the legendary 1989 debut and Second Coming (1994). His bass lines on tracks such as “I Wanna Be Adored, ” “I Am the Resurrection, ” and “Fool’s Gold” became a benchmark for an entire generation of British musicians.

After The Stone Roses disbanded in 1996, Mani joined the Scottish band Primal Scream, playing with them until 2011 and recording five albums, from Vanishing Point to Beautiful Future. In 2011, he returned to the reunited Stone Roses, performing with them until their final breakup in 2017.

The Stone Roses’ vocalist Ian Brown wrote on X: “Rest in peace, Mani.” Liam Gallagher of Oasis said he was “in complete shock” and “absolutely devastated, ” calling Mani “his hero.” Tim Burgess of The Charlatans described him as “one of the best in every way — such a wonderful friend.”

Just six days ago, the musician had announced a UK speaking tour, scheduled from September 2026 to June 2027. During the tour, he planned to share memories of his career with The Stone Roses and Primal Scream.

Mani’s wife, Imelda, passed away from colon cancer in November 2023. The couple is survived by their twin sons.
