Alex Van Halen Is Working on a New Album with Toto’s Steve Lukather
Legendary drummer Alex Van Halen has confirmed that he is actively working on a new music album together with renowned guitarist Steve Lukather from the band Toto. In a recent interview on the Metal Sticks podcast, Alex stated that the project involves reviewing and refining unreleased material created with his brother, Eddie Van Halen, who passed away in October 2020.
These recordings are stored in an archive known as the “vault, ” containing numerous demos for future songs. Alex emphasized that he plans to carefully develop them to release a high-quality album that will serve as a worthy Van Halen legacy. According to the musician, there is enough material in the vault for three to four albums, and working on it requires time and attention.
Steve Lukather’s role in the project does not include performing guitar on the final tracks. The musician himself stated on Instagram that he will “never play a single guitar note on a Van Halen song.” He is assisting Alex as a co-producer and consultant, organizing and reviewing the archived material for future work.
The friendship between Lukather and Van Halen spans decades. They collaborated on iconic projects, including Michael Jackson’s “Beat It, ” where Lukather played the riff and Eddie performed the solo. Moreover, they contributed to each other’s solo albums, making their collaboration on the new album even more significant for fans of both legendary acts.
At this time, the official release date of the new album has not been announced, and details about the format—studio, compilation, or remixed—remain unknown. However, confirmation that Alex is working with Van Halen archives and involving the experienced Lukather has already sparked widespread interest among fans worldwide.
