Scandal Surrounding Wayne Static Film: Families of the Musician and Tera Wray Strongly Condemn Unauthorized Documentary
The families of late STATIC-X frontman Wayne Static and his wife Tera Wray issued a firm public statement expressing their strong opposition to the creation of an unauthorized documentary film about their lives and relationship. The relatives emphasized that they did not grant permission for the project and are prepared to take legal action if their position is ignored.
According to the families, their outrage stems from the filmmakers’ intention to use personal archives, rare photos, video recordings, concert footage, and private-life materials. They reminded the public that any visual representations, as well as the voice and likeness of Wayne Static, are part of his estate and may only be used with official approval. They specifically noted that they do not support attempts to use modern technologies, including AI-generated audio, to recreate Wayne’s voice without their consent.
The situation escalated after director Matt Zane announced his plans to begin production and launch a fundraising campaign in January 2026. He claimed to possess unique archival materials and even unreleased music created in collaboration with Wayne, which he intended to finalize. According to the families, such an approach is unacceptable and shows a lack of respect for the memory of the musician and his wife.
The relatives stressed that there is already an official documentary, Evil Disco — The Rise, Fall, And Regeneration Of Static-X, which they support and consider the only accurate and appropriate work recounting Wayne’s creative journey and personal story. They suggested that the creators of the unauthorized film hand over any materials they possess for possible inclusion in the official project—provided it is done with respect for the couple’s legacy.
Wayne Static, a major influence on industrial metal and the driving force behind STATIC-X, passed away in 2014 at age 48. His wife Tera Wray, known as an actress and model, died in 2016.
The controversy surrounding the unauthorized biographical film continues to grow, and much now depends on whether the filmmakers are willing to consider the families’ stance and honor the rights of the estate. With renewed interest in STATIC-X and the legacy of its frontman, the issue of respectful handling of his memory has become especially sensitive—and this is why the families intend to defend Wayne’s and Tera’s legacy through all legal means available.
