Former Scorpions Bassist Francis Buchholz Dies at 71

The world of rock music has suffered a great loss: at the age of 71, renowned German bassist Francis Buchholz, who was a longtime member of the legendary band Scorpions, passed away. His family officially announced his death on January 22, 2026, noting that he passed away after a private battle with a serious illness, surrounded by his loved ones. The family expressed gratitude to fans around the world for the love and support they showed Francis throughout his life.

Francis Buchholz was born on February 19, 1954, in Hanover, Germany. He began his musical career at a young age and soon became a member of the band Dawn Road. In 1973, he joined Scorpions, where his unique bass playing helped shape the band’s distinctive sound. Buchholz remained a member until 1992, contributing to the creation of legendary albums including Fly to the Rainbow, Lovedrive, Blackout, Love at First Sting, and Crazy World. His bass lines in songs like Rock You Like a Hurricane, Still Loving You, and Wind of Change became rock anthems and brought the band worldwide fame.

After leaving Scorpions, Francis continued working in the music industry, participating in various projects, including collaborations with guitarist Michael Schenker in Michael Schenker’s Temple of Rock and performances with the band Dreamtide. At the same time, he ran a business, founding a company that rented stage equipment and lighting, and published a book on bass guitar, which was recognized by musicians.

Buchholz is survived by his wife Hella and three children — son Sebastian and twin daughters Luisa and Marietta. His passing was a significant event for the music community: fans and colleagues remember him as a talented, sincere, and dedicated musician who made a huge contribution to rock music and inspired an entire generation of musicians.

The death of Francis Buchholz is not only a personal loss for his family and friends but also a significant loss for the world of rock. His work, distinctive bass lines, and unique style will remain forever in the hearts of fans and in the history of music.
