Movistar Plus+ announced the premiere of a documentary film about the final years of David Bowie’s life — “David Bowie: el último acto”
The Movistar Plus+ platform has announced the premiere of the documentary film “David Bowie: el último acto”, dedicated to the final years of the life and creative career of David Bowie. The film will premiere on January 9, 2026, timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the death of the iconic British artist, whose influence on music, fashion, and contemporary culture remains immeasurable.
The new documentary focuses on the closing chapter of Bowie’s career — a period that for a long time remained largely out of the public eye. The film traces his path from the challenging years of the 1990s, when he deliberately distanced himself from the mainstream, to the creation of the album Blackstar, his final studio release. The record was released on January 8, 2016, on Bowie’s 69th birthday, and just two days later the world learned of his death.
The film offers a thoughtful and restrained look at how David Bowie continued to experiment and rethink his artistry even during the most difficult period of his life. Particular attention is paid to the making of Blackstar, an album that is now regarded by critics as one of the boldest and most complex works in the history of 21st-century popular music. Its sound, visual imagery, and lyrics have become the subject of extensive interpretation and analysis.
The documentary includes archival materials, rare video footage, and interviews that allow viewers to gain a deeper understanding of Bowie’s creative process in his final years. The film avoids sensationalism and speculation, focusing instead on the artist’s creative legacy and his artistic freedom — remaining true to himself until the very end.
The project was directed by Jonathan Stiasny, with production handled by Rogan Productions, a company known for its documentaries about major figures in the global music scene. The film has a running time of approximately 90 minutes and is structured as a cohesive narrative portrait of the final stage of the artist’s life.
David Bowie passed away on January 10, 2016, after an 18-month battle with cancer, a diagnosis he did not disclose publicly. His death shocked millions of fans around the world, while Blackstar came to be seen as a symbolic farewell — a final artistic statement from an artist who transformed personal struggle into a powerful creative work.
As part of a commemorative program, Movistar Plus+ will also rebroadcast the documentary Moonage Daydream, giving viewers the opportunity to explore different dimensions of Bowie’s legacy — from a sweeping retrospective of his career to a focused and intimate look at its conclusion.
The premiere of “David Bowie: el último acto” will be a significant event not only for Bowie’s fans but also for anyone interested in the history of contemporary culture, documentary filmmaking, and the phenomenon of artists whose influence extends far beyond the stage.
