Legendary The Pogues Drummer Andrew Ranken Dies at 72

The music world has lost one of its outstanding figures — Andrew Ranken, drummer and co-founder of the iconic Celtic punk band The Pogues. The musician passed away on February 10, 2026, at the age of 72, as officially confirmed by the band members on social media.

Andrew Ranken was born on November 13, 1953, in London. He joined The Pogues in 1983, roughly a year after the band’s founding, and became a key figure shaping the group’s distinctive sound. He remained with the band until its first breakup in 1996 and rejoined during the reunion period from 2001 to 2014.

Ranken was known among colleagues and fans as “The Clobberer”, a nickname reflecting his energetic and distinctive drumming style. In addition to drums, he played percussion and harmonica, and occasionally provided vocals. His talent contributed to The Pogues’ unique atmosphere on landmark albums such as Red Roses For Me, Rum Sodomy & The Lash, and If I Should Fall From Grace With God. Among the hits he recorded, “Fairytale of New York” and “Dirty Old Town” stand out.

The cause of Andrew Ranken’s death has not been officially disclosed. According to Western media reports, in recent years the musician suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which prevented him from participating in the band’s recent anniversary tour.

Colleagues, friends, and fans have already expressed their condolences, remembering him as a talented musician and close friend. In an official statement, The Pogues said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Ranken. Andrew, thank you for everything — your friendship, wit, generosity of spirit, and, of course, your music. You will forever remain our friend and brother. Our thoughts and love are with his family.”

The death of The Pogues’ drummer is especially tragic for fans, as it occurred just over two years after the passing of the band’s frontman, Shane MacGowan. Today, Andrew Ranken will remain in music history as the heartbeat and rhythm of The Pogues, who helped the band gain worldwide recognition and become a cult icon in Celtic punk.
