Bloodbath and Cancer in Madrid: a night where death metal returns to its bloodline
On June 22, 2026, Revi Live in Madrid hosts one of the most significant death metal events of the year: Bloodbath and Cancer sharing the stage for Born From The Dead Night. The pairing is anything but arbitrary — it is the convergence of two bands whose histories are bound by a shared lineage stretching back to the earliest days of the genre.
Bloodbath was formed in Stockholm in 1998 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström of Katatonia, alongside Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth and Dan Swanö of Edge of Sanity. The project was conceived as a pure, unfiltered homage to old school death metal, drawing equally from the Swedish scene and the Florida school. Their debut EP Breeding Death was written in two days — a statement of intent that needed no further explanation. From Resurrection Through Carnage to The Fathomless Mastery and on to the savage Survival Of The Sickest (2022), the Swedish death metal supergroup has never deviated from its purpose. Since 2014, Nick Holmes of Paradise Lost has handled vocal duties, bringing a new layer of darkness to Grand Morbid Funeral and The Arrow Of Satan Is Drawn.
Opening the night — and in many ways completing its premise — are Cancer, the British death metal pioneers from Ironbridge, Shropshire, formed in 1988. Their debut To the Gory End (1990) and second album Death Shall Rise (1991), both recorded with producer Scott Burns at Morrisound Studios in Florida, are foundational texts of extreme metal. The connection between the two bands is literal: Bloodbath named themselves after the track “Blood Bath” from Cancer’s debut album. Born From The Dead Night is not just a concert — it is the closing of a circle drawn in the early 1990s.
