Simple Plan in Madrid: 25 Years of Pop-Punk, Confetti and Nostalgia at Palacio Vistalegre
On October 27, 2026, Madrid’s Palacio Vistalegre became the setting for Simple Plan’s 25th-anniversary celebration. The Canadian band brought their Bigger Than You Think! tour to Spain, bringing together fans from different generations. Charlotte Sands and Welsh rockers Neck Deep completed the night’s lineup.
Charlotte Sands opened the evening. Her approximately 30-minute performance featured songs from her Satellite album, including Dress. At 8:15 p.m., it was Neck Deep’s turn. The Welsh band drew from different stages of their career, closing their set with In Bloom. The venue gradually filled as anticipation built for the headliners.
Simple Plan took the stage at 9:20 p.m., opening with I’d Do Anything. From the first chords, the venue turned into a full-scale pop-punk celebration. Nothing Changes, Shut Up! and Jump maintained the momentum, followed by Jet Lag, Addicted, Your Love Is a Lie and Welcome to My Life. The setlist also included Loser of the Year.
Frontman Pierre Bouvier quickly connected with the Madrid crowd. During the band introductions, he gave the musicians Spanish names: he became Pedro himself, while Jeff Stinco, Chuck Comeau and Sébastien Lefebvre received their own Spanish-inspired aliases. The audience enthusiastically joined in, turning the moment into something resembling a football crowd chanting the singer’s name.
During Summer Paradise, huge inflatable beach balls were sent flying over the audience. But the show was about more than just fun. For Untitled (How Could This Happen to Me?), Bouvier moved to the piano near the sound desk and performed the song in a much more intimate setting. Thousands of illuminated phone screens accompanied one of the evening’s most emotional moments.
Another memorable scene came during Million Pictures of You, when the vocalist climbed into the stands and continued singing among the fans. The band then returned to its electric sound with Astronaut and the Grow Up / Vacation medley.
One of the night’s special treats was a medley featuring Smash Mouth’s All Star, Avril Lavigne’s Sk8er Boi and The Killers' Mr. Brightside. After What’s New Scooby-Doo? and Where I Belong, the musicians left the stage, but only briefly.
The encore began with I’m Just a Kid. Chuck Comeau appeared wearing a Spanish national football team shirt, shouted “¡España, campeones del mundo!” and launched into the crowd for a spot of crowd surfing. This Song Saved My Life followed, before Perfect brought the evening to a close with one final chorus sung by the audience. The concert ended amid confetti and prolonged applause.
The Madrid show demonstrated that Simple Plan can still turn their musical history into a vibrant live experience. The night brought together the anthems that defined a generation’s teenage years, humour, musicians among the crowd and genuinely emotional moments. Twenty-five years into their career, the Canadians continue to connect with both longtime fans who grew up with their music and a new generation discovering it.
